Antique W. Hunt hewing hatchet manufactured by Douglas Axe Manufacturing Co., East Douglas, Massachusetts. Forged single-bevel broad hatchet with one flat face and one beveled cutting face, plus a slightly offset handle typical of traditional carpenter's hewing axes. Original wood handle with excellent aged patina. Measures 15 3/8" overall, 13 1/2" from handle end to top of blade, 11" handle, 5 3/8" cutting edge, eye measures approximately 5/8" x 1 3/4", poll measures approximately 2 1/2" x 1 1/2", and weighs 2 lbs. 11 oz. A desirable antique woodworking tool for collectors, timber framers, or early hand-tool enthusiasts.
